Objectives

The key objective of the AVoS project is to provide an intelligent and barrier-free learning environment that enables visually impaired persons to study vocabulary in a foreign language autonomously.

Barrier-free learning platform

Visually impaired persons have a fundamentally different way of interacting with technology from sighted persons. Most exisiting vocabulary learning tools pre-suppose a seeing audience. However, visually impaired persons rely mostly on their auditory and tactile senses. It is useful to develop a solution that embraces these differences. AVoS provides a learning platform that is user-friendly for auditory output. In order to ensure that the users‘ needs and desires are met, members of the target group guide the development of AVoS. This approach is called user-centered design. Concepts are evaluated with users before implementing technical solutions.

Learning content

Proficiency in another language is ultimately achieved through knowing a lot of words in that language. While it is also important to be able to use correct grammatical constructions, vocabulary provides the substance of communication. There is a reason why there is a greater need for dictionaries than for grammar books. Every learner has a unique learning profile. For beginners it makes sense to focus on the most frequent words of a language. Advanced learners may want to focus on an area of their personal interest, such as the words covered in their language class or words necessary to understand scientific articles.
